More about this artwork

The painting "Puistokuva Englannista, 1921" by Alfred William Finch, beautifully captures a serene park scene set in England. The artwork features a vivid depiction of an array of robust trees, with their trunks bending and branches sprawling across the canvas, enveloping much of the upper and middle portions of the scene in dense foliage. The foliage is rendered in varying shades of green, interspersed with specks of lighter colors that suggest light filtering through the leaves. The composition is centered around a winding, sandy path that invites the viewer's eye into the heart of the painting. Along this path, two figures can be seen: one person is seated on the left side amidst the grass and flowers, possibly a woman given the suggestion of a red dress, which adds a pop of color against the predominantly green backdrop. On the right is another figure, standing and facing away, suggesting a contemplative or leisurely stroll through the park. This human presence introduces a narrative element of tranquility and casual enjoyment of nature. The texture of the brushstrokes gives the scene a lively, almost tactile feel, emphasizing the vibrant, organic, and somewhat unstructured character of a natural woodland landscape. Finch's use of impressionistic techniques is evident in his fluid, expressive style and the dynamic interplay of light and shadow, which gives the painting a sense of immediacy and vitality.

Alfred William Finch (1854-1930) was a Neo-Impressionist artist born to British parents in Brussels, Belgium. His works utilized the color palette and Pointillism technique, which were shared by other significant figures of the Neo-Impressionism movement, including Paul Signac, Camille Pissarro, and Georges Seurat. Finch was among the founding members of Les XX (Les Vingt), a group of twenty artists based in Brussels that challenged antiquated and conservative artistic traditions and academism. The group held annual art exhibitions, greatly influencing the development of Neo-Impressionism. In his later years, Alfred William Finch also produced ceramics and pottery, decorated with a fusion of his familiar Neo-Impressionism, Arts and Crafts, and Belgian Art Nouveau styles. His artworks primarily portray the atmospheric beauty of nature and the countryside along the Channel coast. Alfred William Finch spent the majority of his artistic career in Helsinki, where he passed away in 1930.
