More about this artwork

This artwork by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, titled "Affiche Met Aankondiging Van Gemaskerd Bal In Casino Van Parijs Met Portretten Van Cha-U-Kao En Yvette Guilbert," presents a lively and engaging scene associated with the decadent nightlife of Paris in the late 19th century. Created as a poster, it advertises a masked ball at the Casino de Paris, capturing the energy and movement typical of such social gatherings during this time. The composition is filled with dynamic characters, highlighting the flamboyant and festive atmosphere. In the foreground, distinctive to Toulouse-Lautrec’s style, we see the figures of Cha-U-Kao, a famous clown, and Yvette Guilbert, a celebrated singer of the era, although they are portrayed in a nuanced and somewhat abstract manner. The bold black outlines and limited color palette prevalent in Lautrec's lithographs are evident, focusing primarily on black, white, and shades of blue. The text "Les Redoutes du Casino de Paris Nouveaux Confetti" appears prominently, inviting the viewer to experience the glamorous events of the Parisian elite nightlife. The use of space and silhouette creates a sense of immediacy and intimacy, pulling the viewer into the festive mood.

Henri de Toulouse–Lautrec (1864–1901), was an aristocratic alcoholic French artist known for his socially unacceptable lifestyle. He observed and documented the Parisian nightlife through his post-impressionist artworks. Sharing a similar style as other well-known French artists such as Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat, he created memorable works of art depicting the lifestyle that he enjoyed before passing at a young age.
