More about this artwork

"Marvel of the World" by Edward Burne-Jones is a captivating painting that beautifully captures a figure set within a lush, expressive landscape. It's a circular composition, framed by a warm, amber border adding a touch of earthiness and coherence. At the center of the painting is a solitary woman in a flowing, pale pink dress, gracefully walking along what appears to be a path by a lively, textured blue river. Her movement seems poised and deliberate, suggesting a sense of calm purpose. Her dark hair billows softly behind her, giving a sense of motion that corresponds with the dynamic, swirling strokes that depict the water and the breezy sky. The background features a serene pastoral landscape, with gentle hills and clusters of trees under a sky streaked with lighter tones, possibly indicating either dawn or dusk. The overall effect of the scene is one of tranquil beauty mingled with a hint of mysticism, typical of Burne-Jones’s works which often explored themes from mythology and literature with rich symbolism. This painting, as part of Burne-Jones's "Flower Book," could be seen as a depiction of the marvel and enchantment of the natural world, a theme emphasized by elements like the blooming flowers in the background and the flowing water. Burne-Jones's use of soft yet vivid colors and his fluid, almost dreamy style of painting enhances the ethereal quality of the image, inviting the viewer to step into a world that transcends the ordinary.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
