More about this artwork

This painting, titled "Still-Life - Study Of Onions" by Edward Burne-Jones, captures the simple yet profound beauty of everyday objects, in this case, onions. The artwork features a composition of several onions of different sizes and colors arranged thoughtfully on a subdued background. The artist has used soft, flowing brushstrokes to render the onions, which vary in hue from a pale silvery color to deep, rich browns and a vibrant shade of pink.Shadows and light play across the surface of each onion, highlighting the natural textures and subtle sheen of their skins. A few green leaves, probably part of the onions, add a touch of freshness and contrast to the earthy tones of the bulbs. The arrangement is casual but carefully constructed to draw the viewer's eye across the various forms and colors. The background is loosely painted, helping to lift the onions into the focal point of the piece.Edward Burne-Jones, primarily known for his work in the Pre-Raphaelite style, shows in this painting his versatility and his keen eye for detail and natural beauty, which is evident even in such a simple subject as onions. This still life study exudes a sense of tranquility and the beauty in everyday kitchen scenes.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
