More about this artwork

"The Month of March" by Edward Burne-Jones is a captivating pencil drawing that portrays a female figure as a personification of the month. The artwork exquisitely captures the essence of early spring, blending human elements with nature in a harmonious composition. In the foreground, the central figure is a woman draped in flowing robes that suggest grace and movement. Her posture is gentle and somewhat introspective, as she holds a bunch of spring blossoms close to her heart. This suggests a deep connection with the rebirth and renewal associated with March.Behind the woman, the abundance of floral motifs and blooming branches creates a rich tapestry that fills the background. These elements are intricately detailed, showcasing Burne-Jones's skill in rendering nature with a delicate touch. The blossoms perhaps are indicative of the early blooms of spring, signaling the end of winter and the beginning of a fertile season. To her right, a small bird, possibly a symbol of springtime and the song that accompanies warmer days, perches quietly, adding another layer of life and vitality to the scene.Overall, this drawing is not just a visual representation but also a celebration of the changing seasons, capturing the spirit of March with poetic beauty and a fine attention to detail. Burne-Jones’s art often explored themes of myth and nature, and in this work, he eloquently marries the two, capturing the transient beauty of spring in a timeless manner.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
