More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Burne-Jones, titled "Jacob's Ladder" from The Flower Book, captures a serene, mythical interpretation of the biblical story of Jacob's ladder. The illustration is presented in a circular format, drawing the viewer's focus inward to a poignant celestial scene. At the center of the image, a ladder stretches up toward a radiant, softly glowing sky, hinting at the divine. Angels with golden wings are depicted on and around the ladder. Some ascend and others descend, illustrating the miraculous vision Jacob experienced, as described in the Bible. These angels are rendered with detailed, flowing robes and appear both ethereal and purposeful. The landscape surrounding the central event is gently rolling hills, detailed with a serene, pastoral quality typical of Burne-Jones's style. The color palette features soft blues, greens, and earthy tones that give the painting a tranquil, dream-like atmosphere. This artwork successfully merges religious iconography with a personal, almost intimate scale and setting, inviting the viewer to reflect on the mystical and the heavenly in the quietude of a beautiful landscape. Edward Burne-Jones's use of soft lines and meticulous detail contributes to the overall feeling of peace and reverence.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
