More about this artwork

The painting "Study For 'The Garden Court'," part of Edward Burne-Jones's Briar Rose Series, is an evocative piece that beautifully captures a moment of deep emotion and story-telling through its visual elements. In this study, we see a figure, likely a woman based on the style of the clothing and hair, deeply slumped in a state of exhaustion or sleep. Her body is gracefully folded forward, with her head resting heavily on her arm, suggesting a profound tiredness or perhaps an enchanted sleep, which aligns with the Sleeping Beauty theme of the Briar Rose Series. The woman's attire is richly detailed and colored in shades of blue, which beautifully contrasts the muted background. Her dress flows around her, emphasizing the curves and folds of the fabric, adding to the softness and depth of the painting. The texture of the dress is rendered with care, incorporating highlights and shadows that suggest the weight and texture of the fabric. The background features subtle lines and what appear to be sketches of branches, possibly thorns, hinting at the encroaching nature often featured in the story of Sleeping Beauty, where the castle becomes enveloped in thorns.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
