More about this artwork

The painting titled "Ascension Of Christ" by Edward Burne-Jones portrays a visually rich and spiritually compelling portrayal of the biblical event when Jesus ascended to heaven after his resurrection. The composition is split into two main registers, enhancing the narrative and adding a sense of ethereal drama. In the upper portion of the artwork, we see Christ at the center, portrayed in a striking deep blue robe, symbolizing royalty and divinity. His arms are slightly opened in a welcoming or blessing gesture. He is flanked by a group of angels, all clad in similar blue robes, which conveys unity and harmony amongst the celestial beings. The angels, like Christ, have golden halos, signifying their sacred nature. The background of this segment is adorned with fluid, almost wave-like celestial patterns that add a mystical ambiance, suggesting the heavenly realm.Below this heavenly assembly, the lower register depicts a group of the Apostles, witnessing this miraculous event. Their expressions are a mix of awe and wonder, with some looking up towards Christ and others engaged in what appears to be a reverential or possibly bewildered conversation about the sight they are witnessing. Their earthly attire, in contrast to the bright blue of the angels, is rendered in muted brown tones which ground them in their human experience and distinctly separate them from the divine figures above. The painting uses color, composition, and facial expressions masterfully to convey the dramatic and miraculous nature of the Ascension.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
