More about this artwork
The painting titled "Apples in Basket" by Marsden Hartley prominently features a rustic basket densely packed with rounded, voluminous apples. The basket sits centrally in the composition, showcasing thick, definitive strokes that give texture and shape to the structure of the basket and the smooth, full forms of the apples. The artwork, executed in a monochromatic scheme, expertly uses shading to create a sense of depth and dimension. Light and shadow contrast dramatically, with the darker shades defining the space around and beneath the basket, and highlights bringing the apples and parts of the basket to visual prominence. The shadows and tones not only suggest the curvature of each apple but also give a realistic texture and tangible quality to the fruit. The background and the surrounding space are rendered with broad, vigorous strokes, contributing to an almost abstract quality and focusing the viewer's attention entirely on the central subject—the basket and its contents. Hartley's style here, while still representational, borders on expressionistic, capturing more than just the physical appearance of the objects but also evoking a certain robust, tactile feel.Overall, Hartley's "Apples in Basket" is a striking piece, emphasizing form and texture over color, allowing the play of light and shade to narrate the simple yet profound beauty of everyday objects.

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) is a Maine native and a leading American Modernist painter, along with his contemporaries, Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe. He is well-known for employing geometric abstraction as well as bold colors and lines. His paintings depicted imagery of nature, landscapes, figures, and still-life. Sponsored by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley went to Europe in 1912, spending most of his time in Germany, where he met Gertrude Stein, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc. After returning to America in 1930, he reconnected with the New England of his childhood and started to portray the landscapes of New England in his paintings.
