More about this artwork

This painting, "Study for 'The Garden Court'" from The Briar Rose Series by Edward Burne-Jones, subtly captures a scene steeped in both tranquility and a poignant stillness. The artwork depicts a figure, likely a princess, sprawled across a wooden bench, entrenched in a deep, enchanting sleep. Her posture is relaxed yet expressive, with one arm dangling off one side of the bench and her hand loosely hanging, imbuing the scene with a sense of motionless drama.Burne-Jones's use of rich, dark tones in the princess's dress contrasts beautifully with her pale skin and the lighter colors of the surrounding elements, like the bench and the floor. This striking contrast enhances the ethereal quality of the scene, suggesting a narrative frozen in time. The lush folds of her gown, skillfully detailed, add a tactile depth to the work, emphasizing the Pre-Raphaelite artists' fascination with vivid textures and intricate patterns.Overall, the painting resonates with themes of enchantment and serene repose, reflecting the broader narrative arc of the Sleeping Beauty tale to which this series is dedicated. Burne-Jones’s work here is a testament to his mastery in creating an atmosphere that is both visually rich and narratively compelling.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
