More about this artwork

The painting titled "Adam" by Edward Burne-Jones features a stylized depiction of Adam, the biblical first man, in a setting that suggests the Garden of Eden. The artwork is done mostly in a monochromatic scheme, using various shades of brown that lend a subtle and harmonious feel.In this piece, Adam is portrayed as a youthful, androgynous figure with a contemplative expression. His pose is relaxed yet poised, with one arm raised to support a branch overhead, suggesting his connection to nature and perhaps his dominion over it, as told in biblical narratives. He holds a spade, linking him to the concept of labor and the Earth. The surrounding flora is lush and oversized, which emphasizes the fantastical and paradisiacal aspect of Eden. The flowers and leaves are rendered in a decorative style typical of Burne-Jones, who was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and later the Arts and Crafts Movement, both known for their intricate, nature-inspired designs and romantic revival of medieval styles.Overall, the painting conveys a sense of serene beauty and a timeless connection to the natural world, while also reflecting the artist's distinct style of blending realism with decorative aesthetics.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
