More about this artwork

"Knob with Seven Rings" by Albrecht Dürer is an intriguing work that demonstrates the artist's meticulous skill in printmaking and his interest in detailed, intricate patterns. In this engraving, you can see a centralized circular motif that is surrounded by seven smaller circular designs evenly arranged around it. Each circle contains a dense, interwoven pattern of rings and loops that create a complex visual texture. The central knob and the surrounding ones are connected by a network of delicate, curly lines, adding to the ornamentation and intricate connectivity of the piece. The background is notably plain, which emphasizes the elaborate work within the circles and makes the detailed patterns stand out even more noticeably. The borders of the painting are adorned with ornamental designs that give the appearance of a richly decorated manuscript or perhaps architectural elements seen in elaborate scroll work from the period. This style is consistent with Dürer's known attention to detail and his ability to work with fine lines to create depth and textural complexity. This particular work is evocative of the Renaissance fascination with geometrical shapes and the symbolism often attributed to circles, such as wholeness and unity. Dürer, being a key figure of the Northern Renaissance, was known for his exploration into art, anatomy, and human proportion as well as in mathematics and geometry, and "Knob with Seven Rings" serves as a testament to his broad range of interests and his mastery in translating these interests into visual art forms.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
