More about this artwork

The image you're inquiring about is not titled "The Execution Of Scrooge's Sacrifice" by Albrecht Durer. Instead, it is a piece titled "Christ before Annas" which is one of the engravings from Albrecht Durer’s “The Small Passion” series, completed between 1508 and 1511.The scene depicted captures a compelling moment from the Passion of Christ, specifically the episode where Christ is brought before Annas, a high priest in Jerusalem. The setting is a chaotic courtroom-like space crowded with figures, both spectators and key participants in the biblical narrative. The central figure, Christ, can be identified by the calm demeanor amidst the hostile crowd. He stands bound as others around him exhibit various gestures of accusation or curiosity.Dürer's skilled engraving technique is evident in the meticulous detail given to both the human figures and their surroundings, from the expressive faces to the architectural elements. The composition is intricate, filled with layers of action and reaction that guide the viewer through the narrative sequence, emphasizing the emotional and physical tension present in the moment. This artwork serves not only as a representation of a biblical story but also as an example of Dürer’s mastery in capturing human emotions and his deep understanding of religious themes, rendered with a vivid sense of drama and detail.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
