More about this artwork

This woodcut by Albrecht Dürer, titled "The Incredulity of Saint Thomas," is a striking depiction of a well-known biblical scene from the Gospel of John. In this moment, Christ invites Thomas to touch his wounds, proving his resurrection and dispelling Thomas's doubts. The impact of the moment is magnified by Dürer's expert use of dramatic details and light.Central to the composition is Christ, who stands with a halo of radiant beams emanating from his head, symbolizing his divine nature. His expression, serene yet commanding, contrasts with the varied expressions of awe, curiosity, and reverence on the faces of the surrounding apostles. Thomas, directly in front of Christ, is depicted reaching out tentatively to touch Jesus' wound, embodying his moment of disbelief turning into belief.Dürer's masterful use of line and texture brings a vividness to the drapery of the garments and the dense, expressive hair and beards of the apostles. The intensity of the scene is further enhanced by the cramped, crowded composition, which focuses the viewer's attention squarely on the interaction between Christ and Thomas. The background, simple yet effective, uses radiating lines to create a focus around Christ, emphasizing his central role in the narrative.Overall, Dürer's work captures not only an important theological moment but also the human emotions of doubt, awe, and eventual faith, making it a compelling piece both artistically and spiritually.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
