More about this artwork

"Figures And Horses" by Jules Pascin is a vivid and energetic watercolor and ink painting that captures a scene bustling with activity. The artwork is characterized by its loose, fluid brushstrokes and the use of muted tones interspersed with splashes of color, creating a dynamic composition. In the scene, there are several human figures and horses intermingled, suggesting a setting likely at a fair or a rural market. The humans vary in posture and activity; some stand, some sit, and one is bent forward, possibly engaged in a task with a horse. The attire of the figures, consisting of hats and casual, practical clothing, reinforces the informal, outdoor setting. The horses are depicted with varying degrees of detail, some sketched more fully while others are only suggested by minimal strokes. The artist’s style conveys movement and vibrancy, possibly reflecting the lively interactions between the figures and their environment. The backdrop is minimally defined, indicating an open sky and perhaps hints of distant structures or natural features, thus keeping the focus on the figures and animals in the foreground.Overall, Pascin’s painting is a captivating portrayal of a moment filled with life, emphasizing the interaction of people and animals through expressive, spontaneous artwork.

Nudes, street scenes and landscapes of women and tropical locations by Bulgarian-born American painter Jules Pascin (1885-1930). Born to an affluent family, Pascin was educated in Austria and Germany before moving to Paris in 1905. It was there that he became associated with the Modernist movement. He attached himself to the human condition and was known for painting portraits of nude and half-dressed women. He stands in the grand tradition of the romantic, bohemian artist.
