More about this artwork
This painting titled "Mrs. Chester Dale" by George Bellows is a striking portrait that captures the essence and poise of its subject in a solemn yet bold manner. The woman depicted is elegantly dressed in a vivid red ensemble which includes a tailored jacket and a matching hat, set against a dark, minimalist background that accentuates her and the bright colors of her attire. Her white blouse and tie provide a sharp contrast to the deep reds, drawing attention to the detailed texture and pattern visible in the tie.The woman's expression is reflective and composed, with a slight tilt of her head and a direct gaze that suggests a moment of quiet introspection or conversation. Her hands are delicately positioned; one rests on what appears to be a white tablecloth, while the other holds onto a green handbag, hinting at a scene of departure or arrival. Overall, Bellows has masterfully rendered the subject with a dignified grace, using a rich palette and confident brushstrokes to convey a sense of character and distinction. This portrait not only showcases Bellows' skill in capturing the subtleties of human expression and attire but also reflects a specific moment in the social and cultural milieu of the time.

George Bellows (1882-1925) was one of America’s greatest artists when he died at the young age of 42. Rooted in realism with focus on social, political and cultural issues, his powerful drawings and paintings depicted boxing matches, and the gritty life of the New York working class. The violent atmosphere of his drawings was a great contrast to his lithographs of seascapes, nudes and portraits with modernism influences.
