More about this artwork
"A Stag at Sharkey's" by George Bellows is a striking black-and-white lithograph that vividly captures the raw, intense energy of a boxing match. The painting features two muscular boxers locked in fierce combat, their bodies entwined as they struggle for dominance within the confines of the boxing ring. The perspective places the viewer close to the action, almost as if one is standing at the ringside. The contrasts of light and shadow are dramatically rendered to highlight the physicality and tension of the scene. The boxers are illuminated against the darker background, making them the focal point of the composition. The audience, partially enveloped in shadow, forms a crowded, eager mass around the ring, their expressions ranging from excitement to anticipation, contributing to the overall atmosphere of aggression and spectacle.Bellows successfully conveys a sense of movement and brutality, emphasizing the sport's primal nature. The etching technique used in this lithograph enhances the textural details of the scene, from the sweat on the fighters' bodies to the tense, gripping hands of the spectators.Overall, the painting is a powerful depiction of early 20th-century boxing culture in New York, reflecting both the physicality of the sport and the emotional engagement of both the audience and the athletes. It stands as a notable example of American realism, capturing the grit and raw beauty of urban life.

George Bellows (1882-1925) was one of America’s greatest artists when he died at the young age of 42. Rooted in realism with focus on social, political and cultural issues, his powerful drawings and paintings depicted boxing matches, and the gritty life of the New York working class. The violent atmosphere of his drawings was a great contrast to his lithographs of seascapes, nudes and portraits with modernism influences.
