More about this artwork

The artwork "Between Rounds, Small, Second Stone" by George Bellows vividly captures a scene from a boxing match. In this black and white lithograph, the attention is centered on a boxer sitting in his corner of the ring during a pause in the match. The boxer, physically drained and possibly injured, is surrounded by his seconds and trainers. One of the team members stands beside him, holding a towel, placing his hand on the boxer's shoulder in a reassuring gesture, while another raises an arm high to hold a sponge aloft, either to signal to someone or to cool down the boxer. The background of the scene is densely populated with spectators, depicted in various states of engagement. Some are absorbed by the action, focused intently on the boxer, while others converse or look around, adding a dynamic atmosphere to the scene. Bellows’ composition uses sharp contrasts in lighting to enhance the dramatic effect, focusing on the exertion and fatigue evident in the boxer’s posture and expression. The crowd around them is portrayed in darker tones, enhancing the spotlight effect on the boxer.George Bellows' skill in capturing the intensity and raw emotion of sports scenes, particularly boxing, is evident in this lithograph. His ability to depict human figures in a state of physical stress and the psychological tension surrounding them reflects his mastery in portraying complex human experiences.

George Bellows (1882-1925) was one of America’s greatest artists when he died at the young age of 42. Rooted in realism with focus on social, political and cultural issues, his powerful drawings and paintings depicted boxing matches, and the gritty life of the New York working class. The violent atmosphere of his drawings was a great contrast to his lithographs of seascapes, nudes and portraits with modernism influences.
