More about this artwork
This painting, *The Harbor, Monhegan Coast, Maine* by George Bellows, vividly captures a dynamic seascape scene. The artwork features a man, dressed in yellow attire, standing on the rocky shore looking out over the harbor. His contemplative pose suggests a moment of quiet reflection or perhaps admiration of the natural beauty surrounding him.The harbor itself is busy with various boats, both moored and sailing on the water's turbulent surface, which Bellows has colored with deep blues and hints of green, suggesting the cool depths of the sea. Above, the sky is a movement of swirling clouds, painted in soft whites and blues, indicating a breezy day. Seagulls fly above, adding life to the scene. To the right of the man, a white boat with a vivid red underside is beached on the shore, providing a strong visual focus due to its bright, contrasting colors against the predominantly dark palette of the foreground rocks and water.Overall, Bellows uses vigorous brushstrokes and a rich, expressive color palette to convey the rugged beauty of the Maine coast. This painting not only showcases his skill in portraying natural landscapes but also evokes the strength and mood of the sea.

George Bellows (1882-1925) was one of America’s greatest artists when he died at the young age of 42. Rooted in realism with focus on social, political and cultural issues, his powerful drawings and paintings depicted boxing matches, and the gritty life of the New York working class. The violent atmosphere of his drawings was a great contrast to his lithographs of seascapes, nudes and portraits with modernism influences.
