More about this artwork

This drawing by Albert Edelfelt, titled "Maaherra-Runon Loppuvinjetti," is an original illustration for "Vänrikki Stoolin Tarinat" (The Tales of Ensign Stål), a collection of poems by Johan Ludvig Runeberg that is cherished in Finnish literature. The artwork, created between 1897 and 1900, features a central flaming torch surrounded by crossed quills or pen nibs, which likely represent laurel branches or some form of foliage typically associated with honor and commemoration. The torch, a symbol often associated with enlightenment, truth, and leadership, suggests a celebration or remembrance of heroic deeds or significant literary achievements, fitting themes for the context of Runeberg’s patriotic poems. The detailed black lines on a sepia background reflect a simple yet solemn style, evoking a sense of quiet dignity and reverence. The manner in which the foliage wraps around the lighted torch may symbolize the unity or blending of arts and heroism, a key theme in Edelfelt's oeuvre and especially resonant in the context of illustrating a seminal nationalistic literary work.
