More about this artwork

This painting by Henri Edmond Cross, titled "Landscape," exhibits the use of light color and delicate line work that is characteristic of the Pointillist movement, of which Cross was a leading figure. The majority of the painting is dominated by a vividly depicted section of nature, portrayed with blots and dashes of color, primarily in shades of green, blue, and yellow. On the right side, there’s a partially colored figure of a bull, adding a dynamic element to the scene. The background and some other patches of the scene are sketched but not fully colored, giving the artwork an impression of being simultaneously finished and a work in progress. This technique perhaps encourages the viewer's imagination to fill in the blanks or appreciate the beauty in partial completion. The presence of a white house sketched among the trees in the center adds a quaint, serene touch, suggesting a human presence in this lush landscape.Cross's technique in this painting—combining outlined areas with patches of rich color—also serves to draw the eye across various focal points, creating a lively yet peaceful scene that captures the essence of the outdoor setting.

Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) was a French artist known for his Pointillism paintings of landscapes and still life. He co-founded Société des Artistes Indépendants in Paris, where he met and was inspired by the Neo-impressionist painter Seurat. Due to rheumatism, Cross moved to the south of France, where Signac was also based. Together they abandoned the tiny colored dots of Pointillism for orderly brushstrokes in the style of mosaic. This was second generation Neo-Impressionism, and laid a path for Fauvism.
