More about this artwork
"Pines on the Coastline" by Henri Edmond Cross is a vibrant watercolor painting that captures the essence of a Mediterranean landscape. The artwork is characterized by its vivid and somewhat abstract portrayal of natural scenery. In the foreground, there are several pine trees, painted with sinuous trunks and branches. The trees are depicted using dynamic strokes of blue, yellow, and green, suggesting the play of light and shadow under the sun.The middle ground of the painting shows a view of the sea, harmoniously segmented into shades of blue and green, representing calm water that reflects the sky above. This tranquil body of water is bordered by a distant coastline, which is rendered with patches of darker blues and greens that suggest dense vegetation or distant hills. The background is less defined, giving a sense of atmospheric perspective, and merges subtly into the sky, which is painted with lighter washes of color that echo the tones found throughout the landscape. Cross uses a loose, impressionistic style that emphasizes color and light over precise form, which lends this painting a dreamlike quality. The overall effect is a serene, picturesque scene that conveys the beauty and peacefulness of a coastal landscape.

Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) was a French artist known for his Pointillism paintings of landscapes and still life. He co-founded Société des Artistes Indépendants in Paris, where he met and was inspired by the Neo-impressionist painter Seurat. Due to rheumatism, Cross moved to the south of France, where Signac was also based. Together they abandoned the tiny colored dots of Pointillism for orderly brushstrokes in the style of mosaic. This was second generation Neo-Impressionism, and laid a path for Fauvism.
