More about this artwork
This vibrant painting, titled "Mediterranean Landscape With A White House," by Henri Edmond Cross reflects the luminescent quality of the Mediterranean coastal area through the use of bright, expressive colors. In this piece, the viewer sees a panoramic view of a lush, verdant landscape that leads up to a distinctive white house prominently positioned in the background. The house stands out against a backdrop of blue hills and a subtly indicated sky, largely conveyed through softly staggered brushstrokes in shades of blue, lavender, and white. The foreground is filled with an opulent array of trees and vegetation depicted in various shades of green, blue, and touches of yellow, suggesting the sun-drenched colors typical of the region. These natural elements appear almost like dabs of paint, lending a textural, almost mosaic-like quality to the scene. The artist's use of color not only captures the vivacity of the natural scene but also evokes the warm, sunlit atmosphere of the Mediterranean environment. In the middle distance, the sea is suggested through patches of blue and aqua, which harmonize with the overall palette of cool tones, balancing beautifully against the warmer hues of the land.

Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) was a French artist known for his Pointillism paintings of landscapes and still life. He co-founded Société des Artistes Indépendants in Paris, where he met and was inspired by the Neo-impressionist painter Seurat. Due to rheumatism, Cross moved to the south of France, where Signac was also based. Together they abandoned the tiny colored dots of Pointillism for orderly brushstrokes in the style of mosaic. This was second generation Neo-Impressionism, and laid a path for Fauvism.
