More about this artwork
The painting titled "Fishmarket" by Camille Pissarro portrays a bustling outdoor market scene, vivid with activity and rich in detail. The setting is an expansive open space, presumably a town square, flanked by rows of multistoried buildings, their facades revealing variations in color and architectural styles typical of a late 19th-century European city.In the foreground, Pissarro has depicted a throng of people, likely both vendors and shoppers, engaged in the commerce and chatter of a busy market day. The individuals are rendered in loose brushstrokes, which while lacking in precise detail, vividly convey the movement and vibrancy of the crowd. At the center, there stands a structure which appears to be the main focus of the trade, presumably the fish market itself; its facade adorned with arches and covered entries, a characteristic design for market buildings designed to accommodate a flux of people and goods. The artist uses a lively palette to convey a sense of animation and atmosphere. A variety of colors in the clothing of the people adds a dynamic quality to the scene, contrasting with the more subdued hues of the buildings and the paved square.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro
Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
