More about this artwork

"The Jetty at Cassis, Opus 198" by Paul Signac is a striking representation of the harbor at Cassis, a small town located on the southern coast of France. This painting exemplifies Signac's mature pointillist technique, where he masterfully uses small, distinct dots of color to compose a vibrant, luminous scene. In the painting, Signac depicts a bustling jetty leading into a bright blue sea, dotted with sailboats that add a sense of leisure and movement. The foreground features a light, sandy path that guides the viewer's eye towards the jetty and beyond to the horizon. On the left side, the sea shifts in hues of deep blues and turquoise, reflecting the sky above. The background is adorned with a gentle, rising hillside characterized by sparse vegetation and the occasional building, which possibly serve as homes or storage huts for fishing gear. Signac’s use of color varies subtly across the composition, reflecting the natural light and atmosphere of this seaside setting. The overall effect of Signac's technique is one of shimmering light and vibrant color, capturing not just the visual beauty of Cassis but also the tranquil yet lively ambiance of a Mediterranean coastal town. The artwork invites viewers to appreciate the harmony of natural forms and human presence, highlighting the beauty of the landscape through the lens of pointillism.

Paul Signac (1863-1935) was a French Neo-Impressionist painter. Together with Georges Seurat, Signac developed the Pointillism style. He was a passionate sailor, bringing back watercolor sketches of ports and nature from his travels, then turning them into large studio canvases with mosaic-like squares of color. He abandoned the short brushstrokes and intuitive dabs of color of the impressionists for a more exact scientific approach to applying dots with the intention to combine and blend not on the canvas, but in the viewer's eye.
