More about this artwork
The painting depicts a rural scene featuring a young farmer standing on a plowed field. He is dressed in classic overalls with a white shirt underneath and a cap, leaning on a shovel. Next to him are two tree stumps. The landscape includes a neatly plowed field curving around the edge of the farm, leading towards a distant farmhouse and grain silos under a vast, open sky. A fence runs along the field, and a flock of birds flies in the sky, adding a sense of movement to the tranquil setting.

Grant Wood’s (1891-1942) childhood Iowa farm life inspired him through his artistic career. Wood's interest in drawing and painting blossomed in his early adult years and he began submitting work to competitions. In 1905, he eventually won third place in a national competition and become a professional artist. His artworks focused on people, simple life in the countryside, and mythic subjects from American history. His breakthrough work, American Gothic, also featured in our collection, illustrated the reality of the American rural life.
