More about this artwork

This painting, titled "Still Life With A White Mug," attributed to François Boucher, is an elegant representation of everyday objects arranged thoughtfully to capture a moment of still life. The composition features a white mug prominently displayed on the right side of the canvas. This mug, with its simple and utilitarian form, reflects the light beautifully, showcasing subtle details like its rounded handle and the light cracks that suggest its age and fragility. To the left of the mug, there is a sumptuous display of fruit, consisting of two pears and three apples, which are painted with a rich, vivid realism. The fruits have a tactile quality, with their surfaces reflecting the light differently, highlighting their individual colors and textures. The pear, with its soft, green-yellow skin, contrasts sharply with the shiny red and yellow hues of the apples. The play of light and shadow on the fruit not only emphasizes their volumetric forms but also adds a dynamic quality to the scene. The background and the surface on which these objects rest are muted in tone, composed of dark, earthy browns that serve to bring the brightness of the fruit and the purity of the white mug to visual prominence.

François Boucher (1703–1770) was a French painter, engraver, illustrator and printmaker. He was a proponent of Rococo and had a huge influence in spreading the style throughout Europe. His art was idyllic and voluptuous with a high-toned palette of blues and pinks. He created designs for all decorative arts, porcelains and tapestries. Boucher also painted several portraits including his patroness Madame de Pompadour. He is one of the most celebrated decorative artists of the 18th century.
