More about this artwork

Francois Boucher, a master of Rococo artistry, portrays an enchanting scene of mythological grace in his work, "Venus Reclining on a Dolphin," crafted around 1745. Boucher’s adeptness with the Rococo style is evident in the delicate texture and sensual forms highlighted in this beautiful drawing. The image gracefully presents Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, reclining atop a spirited dolphin, symbolizing her dominion over the sea, reminiscent of her birth from the ocean foam. Venus is depicted with an ethereal elegance, her body luxuriously relaxed and slightly turned towards the viewer, which enhances her allure and the intimate feel of the composition. The flowing lines and soft hues contribute to a sense of movement and liveliness, as if caught in a gentle marine breeze.Boucher’s use of chalk on paper lends a softness that is perfect for capturing the light and fluidity integral to both the subject and Rococo style. The choice of a muted earthy background accentuates Venus's glowing skin and the playful frolic of the water creature supporting her. This artwork, emblematic of Boucher's romantic and opulent style, captivates viewers with its intricacy and dreamlike quality.

François Boucher (1703–1770) was a French painter, engraver, illustrator and printmaker. He was a proponent of Rococo and had a huge influence in spreading the style throughout Europe. His art was idyllic and voluptuous with a high-toned palette of blues and pinks. He created designs for all decorative arts, porcelains and tapestries. Boucher also painted several portraits including his patroness Madame de Pompadour. He is one of the most celebrated decorative artists of the 18th century.
