More about this artwork

"Still Life with Peonies and a Glass of Wine" by Edward Ladell offers a captivating glimpse into the rich, tactile world of still life painting. In this meticulously detailed composition, Ladell showcases a stunning array of textures and colors that draw the viewer’s eye and stimulate the senses. At the forefront, Ladell places a trio of peonies, each rendered with astonishing detail; their plush petals range in color from soft pinks to deep, vibrant reds, seemingly soft to the touch. Adjacent to these floral beauties, a glass of wine stands elegantly, its contents reflecting the surrounding light and hinting at a lush, green landscape beyond the frame. This reflective play adds a layer of depth and complexity to the scene, inviting viewers to ponder what might lie outside the painting's immediate scope. The background is occupied by a bountiful basket brimming with ripe fruits. Grapes with rich, purple hues, some cloaked in a subtle bloom, are intermingled with vivid red cherries, their surfaces glossy and inviting. The composition's natural element is enhanced by stray leaves and vines that suggest a recent harvest, contributing to the painting’s overall sense of abundance and fertility.Ladell's work not only celebrates the beauty of nature but also the joys of simple pleasures—like a glass of fine wine amidst the tranquility of a fruitful harvest.

Edward Ladell was a British painter known for his still-life paintings of fruit, flowers, and glass vessels. Reminiscent of the 17th-century Dutch still-life traditions, he set his subjects on a marble ledge draped with an oriental rug. Born on April 12, 1821 in Hasketon, United Kingdom, little is known of his personal life, other than that he spent his teenage years working for his father who was a coach builder. Although he was mostly self-taught, it is thought that he may have apprenticed as a pattern designer for a Flemish textile company in Colchester when he was a young man. The artist went on to exhibit at the Royal Academy, the British Institute, and the Royal Society of British Artists. He died on November 9, 1886, in Exeter, United Kingdom. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Museum of Croydon in London, the Royal Albert Museum in Exeter, and the Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate.
