More about this artwork

This image appears to be a representation of a snowflake, captured or interpreted in a highly detailed, symmetrical, and stylized manner. Set against a dark background that enhances its visibility, the snowflake is featured within an octagonal frame. The snowflake itself has a central, six-pointed star-like pattern, a common motif in natural snowflake formations where each arm of the snowflake typically mirrors its opposites in intricate beauty. Surrounding this central design are various detailed embellishments that mimic the delicate, feathery extensions often seen on real snowflakes. These embellishments are intricately rendered, suggesting a deep layer of frost-like texture that is both organic and precise.Wilson Bentley, often known as "Snowflake" Bentley, was famous for his pioneering work in photographing snowflakes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He developed a technique using microscopic photography to capture the unique crystalline structures of snowflakes in great detail before they melted. Each of Bentley's images served to highlight the profound and delicate artistry of nature, emphasizing that no two snowflakes are the same. Therefore, whether this is an artistic rendering inspired by Bentley's photographs or another form of creative tribute, it reflects an appreciation for the delicate and transient nature of snowflakes, capturing their exquisite and ephemeral beauty in a permanent medium.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
