More about this artwork

The image you provided showcases a highly detailed and symmetrical depiction of a snowflake. It stands out with its clean, geometric lines and intricately mapped patterns, which emphasize the unique and natural formation of snowflakes. Each branch of the snowflake displays a specific array of designs, comprising both straightforward and complex patterns, which mirror each other to form a harmonious whole. This representation might not actually be a painting, considering Wilson Bentley, famously known as "Snowflake" Bentley, was renowned for his pioneering work in photographing snowflakes using microscopic photography. Bentley captured over 5,000 snowflake images in his lifetime, proving that no two snowflakes are alike with his detailed photography. His method involved catching the snowflakes on black velvet and quickly photographing them before they melted. The image likely originates from one of Bentley's iconic photographs, which has perhaps been edited or stylized to enhance specific details, allowing us to appreciate the natural artistry and precision of snow crystals. If presented as an artwork titled "Snowflake," the image seamlessly bridges the gap between science and art, showcasing the intricate beauty of nature through a scientific lens.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
