More about this artwork

This image appears to showcase a highly detailed and symmetrical depiction of a snowflake, emphasizing the fascinating and intricate design that snowflakes naturally exhibit. The center of the snowflake features a hexagonal shape with several smaller, detailed geometric and star-like patterns within. This central space is surrounded by larger, branching structures that also exhibit hexagonal symmetry, yet each branch has its own unique set of shapes and motifs, typical of a snowflake's unique crystalline structure. The background is dark, which contrasts sharply with the white and silvery tones of the snowflake, enhancing its delicate and elegant features. The high level of detail suggests an almost microscopic level of observation, a characteristic common in the photographic work of Wilson Bentley, who was known for his detailed and pioneering photographs of snowflakes. Bentley’s work often showcased the natural beauty and diversity of snowflakes, highlighting the concept that each one is unique.Overall, the image captures the ethereal and transient nature of snowflakes, a theme Bentley was deeply passionate about. It serves not only as a visual exploration of natural form and symmetry but also as a reminder of the subtle and often overlooked beauty in the natural world.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
