More about this artwork
This painting, "Still Life" (1912) by Magnus Enckell, showcases a classic still life arrangement composed of various everyday objects, likely chosen for their textural and color contrasts. The composition includes a striking mix of a fresh fish alongside vegetables, fruits, and a large metal pitcher.Distinctively, Enckell has painted the fish with a shimmering, silvery body that draws immediate attention due to its detailed texture and vibrant contrast to the surrounding earthier tones. This central figure is flanked by an assortment of vegetables—likely a head of cabbage and some onions—and fruits, including what appears to be a cut orange, showing the vivid orange interior, placed near the edge of the composition. The strong presence of the large blue pitcher provides a vertical balance to the horizontal layout of the food items. Its dusky blue color complements the range of brown and green hues in the background and among the vegetables. The handle of the pitcher, along with the spoon or ladle resting inside it, adds an element of everyday functionality and human presence, though no people are depicted.Enckell’s use of light and shadow imparts depth, emphasizing the volume and texture of each object.
