More about this artwork
In the painting, a man is depicted in a sturdy stance, sawing a large piece of wood. He is dressed in work-appropriate, modest clothing that includes a long-sleeve shirt slightly rolled up to the forearms, trousers, and a hat reminiscent of the early 19th century. He leans slightly forward, focusing intently on the task, with one foot on the plank for stability. The saw he uses is long, indicating it may be designed for cutting through thick material. Around him, various cut pieces of wood and wood shavings litter the floor, suggesting he has been at this labor for a while. The background is sketchily drawn, indicating an indoor or sheltered workspace with minimal details, amplifying the focus on the man and his physical undertaking.
