More about this artwork
The sketch portrays the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus on a donkey, presumably on their flight to Egypt. Mary is depicted seated on the donkey, her demeanor calm, holding baby Jesus securely with both hands. Jesus appears as a small child, his face surrounded by a halo, echoing the holiness depicted usually in religious art. Mary, too, is crowned by a modest halo, enhancing her sacred role. The donkey is illustrated with attention to detail, from the gentle expression on its face to the muscle definition, suggesting a steady but tired gait.
