The painting depicts a tranquil scene featuring two cows in a grassy field. The main focus is on a large standing cow, detailed with a glossy, patchy coat of predominantly white with black spots. This cow—muscular and healthy looking—is portrayed in a side profile view, emphasizing its robust body and alert stance. Its head is turned slightly toward the left, looking down at a calf lying on the ground. The calf, much smaller in size, shares the same patchy pattern as the adult cow. It appears to be resting comfortably on the lush grass, with its legs tucked beneath its body and its head raised slightly, possibly gazing back at the adult cow.

Jean Bernard (1775–1833) was an avid Dutch art collector and a painter. His portraits of people, nature, and animals were drawn mostly with charcoal and colored crayons which beautifully captured the intricate details of his varied subjects. 

He was a successful artist during his lifetime with many of his works decorating ministries and famous people's homes.
