More about this artwork
It hasn't been established that "Snowflake" is a painting by Wilson Bentley. Instead, Wilson Bentley was famously known for his pioneering photographic work with snowflakes. This image appears to be a photograph of a snowflake, not a painting. The detailed and intricate structures visible in the snowflake are typical of Bentley's photographic style, capturing the unique geometrical formations of individual snowflakes. In this image, the snowflake is exceptionally ornate with symmetric branching arms that create a star-like shape. Each arm of the snowflake exhibits a complex pattern with delicate, feathery spikes. The dark background contrasts starkly with the bright, detailed whiteness of the snowflake, highlighting its delicate and intricate design. Bentley's work beautifully showcases the natural artistry of snow crystals, each one unique and extraordinarily detailed. This photograph exemplifies his ability to reveal the exquisite natural patterns of ice crystals that are typically invisible to the naked eye.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
