By his side, a young boy on foot, adorned in modest attire, mirrors the confident strides of the horse.Flanking the scene, a woman balances a basket atop her head with graceful ease, followed by a young child whose curious eyes survey the tranquil landscape. Their faithful companions, two dogs, animate the foreground, adding a touch of vitality to the peaceful journey. Behind them, a donkey, laden with baskets, trots alongside another horse, completing this picturesque family outing.Verschuur’s mastery in light, shadow, and texture brings this scene to vivid life, offering viewers a glimpse into a day of a bygone era when time moved at the pace of a horse’s trot. Wouterus Verschuur was a Dutch painter of animal subjects – mainly horses – and of landscapes. He is one of the later representatives of Romanticism in Dutch art.

Born to an Amsterdam jeweller, Verschuur received his training from the landscape and cattle painters Pieter Gerardus van Os and Cornelis Steffelaar. As part of this education Verschuur had to copy works by the 17th century painter Philips Wouwerman, like Wouwerman Verschuur’s subjects consist mostly of stable scenes, landscapes with horses and coastal landscapes.
