More about this artwork

"August Belmont and Isabel Perry" is an enchanting painting by Wouterus Verschuur from 1854, that draws the viewer into a vibrant scene of 19th-century elegance and activity. In the foreground, a sophisticated gentleman can be seen riding a sleek, two-wheeled cart, drawn by an enthusiastic chestnut horse. Alongside, there are several animals adding lively motion; two animated dogs play and dash across the scene, conveying an atmosphere of careless freedom and joy.The painting further leads our gaze towards an elegant carriage, drawn by four spirited horses in harness. The horses, notable for their striking chestnut coats and energetic poise, symbolize the vitality of the era. Seated inside the carriage, under the shade of its hood, are two figures, presumably August Belmont and Isabel Perry, lending the piece its title and aristocratic charm. They are portrayed participating in an idle interaction, hinting at the social lifestyles of the upper class during this period. The backdrop is equally captivating, featuring a grand mansion that stands as a testament to the architectural sophistication of the time. The building, rooted in classical design, is partially obscured by lush greenery and mature trees, suggesting the integration of natural beauty with human craftsmanship.Verschuur employs meticulous detail and a soft, warm palette to capture a moment that feels both spontaneous and compositionally balanced.

Wouterus Verschuur was a Dutch painter of animal subjects – mainly horses – and of landscapes. He is one of the later representatives of Romanticism in Dutch art.

Born to an Amsterdam jeweller, Verschuur received his training from the landscape and cattle painters Pieter Gerardus van Os and Cornelis Steffelaar. As part of this education Verschuur had to copy works by the 17th century painter Philips Wouwerman, like Wouwerman Verschuur’s subjects consist mostly of stable scenes, landscapes with horses and coastal landscapes.
