More about this artwork

In the enchanting woodcut titled "Daphnis wordt gewassen door Cloë" (1899) by Lucien Pissarro, we are transported into a serene, pastoral moment where nature, myth, and simplicity merge harmoniously. The artwork depicts a tender scene set in a lush, wooded landscape, where Cloë gently bathes Daphnis by a tranquil pool of water. Pissarro's illustration captures a classical subject, drawing inspiration from ancient Greek lore around these two mythological characters, who are often portrayed as symbols of pastoral innocence and romantic idealism. In the composition, Daphnis is bent slightly forward, highlighting the act and the gentle care with which Cloë attends to him. She is depicted in flowing garments, suggesting grace and a softness that is in harmony with the surrounding environment. The presence of a flock of sheep grazing undisturbed in the background not only amplifies the pastoral theme but also adds to the sense of tranquility and timelessness.Pissarro’s use of bold lines and detailed textures in the vegetation and sheep effectively contrast with the softness of the human figures and enhances the immersive experience of the scene. It is a captivating piece that not only reflects Pissarro’s skill with woodcut techniques but also his ability to evoke emotion and narrative through simplicity and careful composition.
