More about this artwork

This evocative wood engraving by Lucien Pissarro, titled "Ruth en Naomi omhelzen elkaar," captures a powerful moment of emotional connection drawn from the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi. Created in 1896, this piece is an excellent example of Pissarro's skill in the printmaking technique, which is clear in the meticulous detail and expressive linework. The scene depicted by Pissarro shows Ruth and Naomi in a close embrace, symbolizing their deep bond and mutual support. Ruth, a Moabite widow, famously chose to stay with Naomi, her Israelite mother-in-law, after the death of her husband, demonstrating loyalty and devotion across cultural divides. The figures are set within a rustic landscape, likely representing the rural setting of Bethlehem, where the biblical story unfolds. The background features elaborate floral patterns and dense foliage, with a detailed portrayal of a house with visible window frames, adding depth and a sense of place to the composition. The textures created by the wood engraving technique lend a tactile element to the image, enhancing the emotional gravity of the scene. This artwork not only reflects Pissarro's unique style but also his interest in subjects of profound human and spiritual connection, resonating with themes of commitment, family, and cross-cultural unity.
