More about this artwork

Lucien Pissarro's engaging wood engraving, "Twee veehoedsters," captures the pastoral simplicity and tranquil life of the countryside. Created in 1884, this artwork portrays two cowherd girls seated closely together in the midst of a wide field. Their shared gaze and intimate posture suggest a silent conversation or shared reverie. In the background, the rural landscape is depicted with cows grazing quietly. The setting is serene, characterized by broad strokes that define both the field and the distant farm buildings. Pissarro's technique with wood engraving allows for a vivid contrast between the dark figures of the women and the textured, lighter background, emphasizing the depth and perspective in the rural scene.Pissarro's interest in everyday rural activities and his ability to depict them with a poetic sense is evident in this artwork. "Twee veehoedsters" not only provides a glimpse into the daily lives of peasant women in the 19th century but also showcases Pissarro’s mastery in transforming a simple scene into a compelling narrative through the interplay of light, shadow, and form.
