More about this artwork

We are delighted to present "Sketch for The Knight and the Maiden" (1895) by the esteemed Swedish painter Richard Bergh. This fascinating work provides a rare glimpse into Bergh's creative process and illustrates an early stage in the development of one of his more evocative compositions. In this captivating study, Bergh lays the groundwork for a landscape that sets a dramatic and somewhat mystical scene. The absence of the titular knight and maiden offers a peculiar contrast, focusing solely on the environment that would eventually envelop the story. The broad, expressive brushstrokes in hues of earthy browns and greens fashion a tranquil yet somewhat somber pastoral scene. Reflections in a serene pool of water, captured through dabs of lighter tones, add a lyrical quality to the otherwise muted landscape.Dominating the upper third of the canvas, a radiant swath of yellow suggests a sweeping sky or perhaps the dramatic flourish of a setting sun. This element not only injects a vivid life into the composition but serves as an emblematic backdrop that might in the finished work symbolize themes of nobility or chivalrous endeavour."Sketch for The Knight and the Maiden" invites viewers to ponder the transitional nature of artistry—from the seed of an idea to its full realization—and enjoy a moment of beauty suspended in time, before the final characters and narratives take their stage.

Sven Richard Bergh (1858–1919) was a Swedish painter, art critic and museum manager. Despite many years in France, he remained unattracted to Impressionism, preferring instead the Naturalism of painters such as Jules Bastien-Lepage. He also rejected the idea of creating landscapes en plein aire.
