More about this artwork

"Variété" by Richard Bergh, painted in 1887, is a captivating exploration of urban life and leisure during the late 19th century. This compelling work of art offers a glimpse into a vibrant scene set in a variety theatre, a popular form of entertainment during that era.The painting features an array of viewers focused intently on the performance, their silhouettes casting shadows in the dimly lit venue. The audience's attention is directed towards a central figure—a performer—underlined by Bergh's clever use of lighting that highlights the performer amid the broader darkness of the setting. The performer, possibly a dancer or acrobat, can be seen elevated on a stage, adorned with a colorful costume that contrasts vividly against the muted tones of the surrounding environment.Adding to the atmospheric quality of the painting, Bergh uses broad, expressive brushstrokes that capture the motion and energy of the scene. The blurring of forms and the abstract treatment give 'Variété' an almost dreamlike quality, a visual representation of the fleeting moments of entertainment and joy experienced by the audience. In the foreground, dark figures hint at the social dynamics of an entertainment venue, where different classes of society might coalesce, each person drawn to the spectacle for a momentary escape from their daily lives. The rich texture and moody palette of the painting envelop the viewer, inviting them to ponder the interplay of light, shadow, and color in creating a soul-stirring tableau."Variété" by Richard Bergh is more than just a moment captured in time; it is a profound commentary on the human condition, exploring themes of entertainment, escapism, and the social fabric of the time.

Sven Richard Bergh (1858–1919) was a Swedish painter, art critic and museum manager. Despite many years in France, he remained unattracted to Impressionism, preferring instead the Naturalism of painters such as Jules Bastien-Lepage. He also rejected the idea of creating landscapes en plein aire.
