More about this artwork

"Still-life" (1871) by Richard Bergh is an evocative depiction that reflects the subtlety and introspection typical of the artist's work. This painting showcases a seemingly simple arrangement that contains a profound depth of texture and mood.In the composition, a rustic earthenware jug claims the central focus, its surface mottled with warm hues that catch the eye amidst an otherwise subdued palette. The jug, with its classical form, bears a sense of age and utility, suggesting a narrative steeped in everyday life. Beside it, a small glass adds a delicate balance to the composition, its transparency and the reflections within it contrasting with the opacity and solidity of the jug.The background and the surface on which these objects rest are rendered in deep, muted tones that push the viewer’s attention towards the objects themselves. The interplay of light and shadow creates a quiet drama, making this still life not just a visual exploration of objects but an invitation to ponder the unspoken stories they hold.Through "Still-life," Bergh communicates a mastery in capturing the essence of the mundane, elevating it to a subject worthy of contemplation and aesthetic appreciation.

Sven Richard Bergh (1858–1919) was a Swedish painter, art critic and museum manager. Despite many years in France, he remained unattracted to Impressionism, preferring instead the Naturalism of painters such as Jules Bastien-Lepage. He also rejected the idea of creating landscapes en plein aire.
