More about this artwork

Discover the tranquil beauty of Achille Laugé's painting, "La Route de Belvèze vers le Relai," a serene depiction of a country road stretching through the picturesque landscape near Belvèze, France. Painted between 1918 and 1923, this piece exemplifies Laugé's adeptness in the Neo-Impressionist style, with a particular focus on pointillism, albeit with his own distinct approach of softer strokes and a harmonious blend of colors. In the composition, a dusty, sunlit road curves gracefully through the canvas, lined with vibrant, golden wildflowers that seem to dance slightly in the gentle breeze. To the left, a solitary tree with lush green foliage stands sentinel, providing a striking contrast with the bright yellow blooms. Towards the center and to the right, a group of taller trees cast subtle shadows over the path, their dense greenery leading the viewer's eye towards a distant, hazy horizon, suggesting the depth and vastness of the rural setting.Laugé's mastery of light and color creates a peaceful, almost timeless atmosphere. The sky, textured with gentle strokes of pale blue, casts a quiet over the landscape, evoking a sense of calm and stillness. It is a representation not just of a particular place, but of an idyllic, tranquil moment in time, captured forever through the artist's delicate and deliberate brushwork. This painting invites viewers to step into a world of quiet contemplation, to take a leisurely stroll along this secluded country road, surrounded by the natural beauty of the French countryside.

The painter Achille Laugé (1861-1944) was born in Arzens, France. After studying at the famous art academies of the time, the artist followed his own unique path in the Neo-Impressionist movement, always remaining deeply attached to his native region of Occitania. Laugé never followed the methods and advice of his teachers, and his work was considered radical for his time.
