More about this artwork

Achille Laugé's remarkable painting "L’Hort à Cailhau" (1902) captures a serene and pastoral view that transports the viewer to the calm outskirts of Cailhau, a quaint village in southern France. The landscape is portrayed with a rich tapestry of vibrant, stippled color, a technique reminiscent of pointillism, where small distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. In this calming scene, the foreground features golden fields that suggest the glow of an autumn harvest. The composition is carefully structured with vertical tree trunks anchoring the painting on either side, leading the eyes towards the distant horizon. The background holds gently sloping hills dotted with houses, their subdued red and orange hues contrasting with the vivid greens and yellows of the fields. The tall, slender trees, characteristic of Laugé's work, guide the viewer's gaze through the scene, with their bare branches indicating the transitional season. Meanwhile, the greenery to the right envelops the scene in a sense of depth and natural beauty. With "L’Hort à Cailhau," Achille Laugé masterfully blends color and light to reflect the tranquil beauty of the French countryside, encapsulating a moment of pastoral grace and timeless allure.

The painter Achille Laugé (1861-1944) was born in Arzens, France. After studying at the famous art academies of the time, the artist followed his own unique path in the Neo-Impressionist movement, always remaining deeply attached to his native region of Occitania. Laugé never followed the methods and advice of his teachers, and his work was considered radical for his time.
