More about this artwork

Our current exhibit showcases the remarkable work of William Etty, an esteemed English painter known for his striking portraits and exceptional use of color. Among the highlights is "Portrait of a Bearded Man, Bust Length," a captivating depiction that immediately draws viewers into a personal encounter with its subject. In this striking portrait, Etty has masterfully rendered the features of a bearded gentleman, who is portrayed in a profile view that looks toward the right. The painting is dominated by warm, earthy tones which serve to intensify the subject's thoughtful expression. The fine details of his flowing beard and the subtle highlights in his hair are illuminated against the darker, subdued background, creating a luminous effect that draws the eye to his dignified face. The subject's attire is simple and dark, which further focuses attention on his facial features and the texture of his voluminous beard. Etty's skilful brushwork brings out a softness in the man's gaze, suggesting wisdom and a life rich with experiences. This enigmatic figure invites speculation—a scholar, perhaps, or a seasoned voyager of the historical 19th century. This painting not only offers a glimpse into the skillful hand of William Etty but also portrays the nuanced character study of a man whose story is left mostly to our imagination. As you view this compelling portrait, take a moment to consider the depth and complexity that Etty has both concealed and revealed through his artistry.

William Etty was an English artist best known for his historical paintings featuring nude figures. He was the first significant British painter of nudes and still lifes. Born in York, he left school at 12 and became a printer in Hull. After seven years, he finished his apprenticeship and moved to London, where in 1807 entered the schools of the Royal Academy. There he studied under Thomas Lawrence and learned by copying the works of other artists.
