More about this artwork

Artist: Roelant SaveryRoelant Savery's captivating painting, "A Rooster and Chicken in a Landscape," is a striking example of naturalistic art from the early 17th century. In this vibrant oil on wood, Savery showcases his exemplary skill in rendering animals with meticulous detail and vivid color. The foreground of the painting is dominated by a proud and resplendent rooster, its feathers a brilliant array of orange, red, white, and black. The bird stands tall, with an alert expression, surveying its surroundings. To the right of the rooster, a brown hen with softer, more subtle coloring pecks at the ground, adding a dynamic contrast between the two main subjects. In the background, Savery paints a rural, idyllic landscape, softly lit by what appears to be the light of early evening or morning. A glimpse of blue sky provides a bright backdrop behind the ancient castle ruins, evoking a sense of timelessness and the pastoral serenity typical of the Dutch Golden Age landscapes. The painting not only captures the beauty of the birds with astonishing realism but also conveys a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Savery's work is a superb example of the period's fascination with detailed natural studies and speaks to the artist's mastery in blending the vivid life of his subjects with their serene, lush environments.

Roelant Savery (or Roeland(t) Maertensz Saverij, or de Savery, or many variants) was a Flanders-born Dutch Golden Age painter.

Savery was born in Kortrijk. Like so many other artists, he belonged to an Anabaptist family that fled north from the Spanish-occupied Southern Netherlands when Roelant was about 4 years old and settled in Haarlem around 1585. He was taught painting by his older brother Jacob Savery (c. 1565 – 1603) and Hans Bol.
