More about this artwork

On our gallery's website, we feature a remarkable piece by Roelant Savery, titled "Landscape with Waterfall" from the early 1620s. This exceptional work exemplifies Savery's keen eye for natural detail and his adeptness in capturing the majestic tranquility of landscapes. The painting portrays a rugged and serene scene dominated by a dramatic waterfall cascading through a rocky cleft. Around the waterfall, the landscape is meticulously drawn; rugged rock formations and gnarled trees frame the scene, while further back, more delicate and thinly rendered trees can be seen, creating a depth that draws the viewer’s eye deeper into the landscape. In the foreground, the attention to detail continues with intricately depicted foliage and rocks at the water's edge. The softly sketched distant landscape under a clear, vast sky contrasts with the detailed foreground, giving the viewer a sense of the expanse and wildness of the scene.Roelant Savery's "Landscape with Waterfall" not only showcases his skill in rendering natural forms but also captures the essence of the early 17th-century European landscape tradition. This drawing invites viewers to pause and consider the powerful yet harmonious beauty of the natural world.

Roelant Savery (or Roeland(t) Maertensz Saverij, or de Savery, or many variants) was a Flanders-born Dutch Golden Age painter.

Savery was born in Kortrijk. Like so many other artists, he belonged to an Anabaptist family that fled north from the Spanish-occupied Southern Netherlands when Roelant was about 4 years old and settled in Haarlem around 1585. He was taught painting by his older brother Jacob Savery (c. 1565 – 1603) and Hans Bol.
